Black Male Initiative-Georgia (BMI-GA) is taking direct action to empower Black men economically and civically, fostering effective community outcomes through advocacy and grassroots organizing. In response to the critical 2024 Department of Justice (DOJ) reports on the Fulton County Jail and prison system, BMI-GA will host its inaugural Restoration & Representation Summit on April 11, 2025, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at Atlanta Technical College (1560 Metropolitan Parkway, Atlanta, GA).
This transformative summit will spotlight restorative practice tools, approaches, and programs being implemented nationwide. The event will feature two dynamic panel discussions and interactive breakout sessions focusing on:
-
Prison Conditions: Examining the current state of correctional facilities and identifying areas for reform.
-
Repairing Harm & Restoring Values: Exploring strategies for healing individuals and communities impacted by the justice system.
-
Collateral Consequences of Convictions: Addressing the challenges faced by returning citizens and advocating for their successful reintegration.
-
Restorative Practices & Public Safety: Demonstrating how restorative approaches enhance community safety.
The summit will introduce restorative practices centered on relationship, respect, responsibility, repair, and reintegration. BMI-GA emphasizes a community-based and human-centered approach to building a culture that complements and improves engagements within the criminal justice system.
This summit is crucial in addressing the issues highlighted by the DOJ reports and fostering a more just and equitable community.
